Really recommend this video, the creator goes through a graphic design approach to how to work from an existing piece without literally ripping it off, and intentionally learning from the design elements in such a way that you will naturally digest and internalize the sensibility behind the design choices.

I think this self led study process can be tweak for almost any creative skill set too- illustration, music, sculpture, writing, culinary. He’s actually explaining in his craft how to create your own study program.
